Voghera peppers

The Voghera pepper is first mentioned in Italy in the year 1907, through colonial trade with the Americas. Its cultivation declined in the post-war period also due to severe fungal diseases. In 2006, after nearly 60 years from its extinction, it returned to our tables. This was thanks to a group of producers, traders and enthusiasts, among which the Agrarian Institute ITAS Carlo Gallini and the social cooperative Villa Meardi, which together founded the Association for the Protection and Enhancement of the Voghera pepper, under the brand name PepeVo. This “white”, cube-shaped pepper is light green to a mature orange-yellow in colour. It has a sweet flavour and is easily digestible. It is perfect for peperonata and pickles and finds its leading role in risottos.
